Georgia and Maya update

Today Maya said the words 'me' and 'elbow' for the first time. She's learning at a furious rate. It's so much fun for a mama. Georgia says that the silly way to spell her name is 'thirty dollars one hundred percent' and that our phone number is 'gia-orhioia'.

Last night at the library, Maya tried to socialize with the other 1.5 to 2 year-olds. They were climbing around the toy area of the Urbana library -- it's a smallish, square, terraced, carpeted room that's high around the edges and deep in the middle. Good for story-telling, I imagine.

Maya approached the first child, a little girl a little shorter than Maya, maybe 18 months old, and pronounced, with a friendly smile, "Hi."

The little girl stopped and looked at her.

Maya tried again. "Hi."

The little girl continued her playing. Maya climbed around next to her for a little while.

Another child came along, probably about 2 years old. Maya approached, smiled, and said, "Hi."

Again, a 2-year-old stare and puzzlement.

"Hi."

"Aung," she informed the other toddler, pointing at her own chest. Either she was introducing herself or asking the other child to play with her.

The other child continued to look puzzled.

"Hi. Aung."

"Aung." She walked over to stand by the other child, attempting to join in whatever interesting activity was going on, which mainly involved climbing punctuated by looking around.

After a couple of minutes, the other children had been collected by their parents and were leaving. Maya wandered around a little bit and appeared to be processing the experience of attempting to interact. She seemed kind of thoughtful -- she stood and stared into space for a few seconds.

Then we got out some bins of toys from the toy shelf and I tried to interest her in baby Duplos. But she was more interested in seeing what was in the other bins.
